Ledger Wallet App Interface Explained: What Every Menu Does

The Ledger Wallet app is the current name of the app formerly called Ledger Live. It is the window you use with your Ledger device to check balances and to receive and send assets. This page walks through each part of the screen and what every button and menu does, with the computer and mobile screens covered separately, because their layouts are different.

The app does not hold your money. Your assets live on each asset's network, and the keys are in your Ledger device. The app is only a window that reads data to show you and sends transactions to the device for signing. Deleting the app or changing computers does not make your assets disappear.

On a computer

The screen has four parts, numbered in the image: the control bar at the top, the menu on the left, the main area in the middle and the Swap box on the right.

Ledger Wallet app on a computer, in four parts: the top control bar, the left menu, the main area and the Swap box

1. Top control bar

It puts the most used buttons in one place, and you can use it from any page without going back.

Icon Name What it does
Magnifying glass icon for searching assets in the Ledger Wallet app Search crypto Search for assets or connected apps directly from the top bar
Circular arrow icon for refreshing balances and transaction history in the Ledger Wallet app Refresh Fetches fresh data for both balances and transaction history. Use it when the numbers have not updated yet
Eye icon for hiding balances in the Ledger Wallet app Discreet mode Hides balances by replacing them with asterisks. Useful when you open the app in public
Transactions button on the top bar of the Ledger Wallet app on a computer Transactions Opens your full transaction history, which you can export as a CSV file
Person icon that opens the Profile menu in the Ledger Wallet app Profile The main menu, giving access to Settings, Notifications, Ledger Recover, Help, Referral and My Ledger

My Ledger is used more often than you might think. It is in the Profile menu in the top right corner. This is where you install network apps on the device and update its firmware. If you cannot find where to install the Bitcoin app, go here.

2. Left menu

  • Home shows your total balance, asset allocation and recent transactions
  • Accounts lets you view and manage the account for each asset. This is the page you use to receive or send
  • Swap exchanges one asset for another through a provider you choose in the app
  • Earn earns rewards by staking assets with the network
  • Discover opens external apps connected to Ledger Wallet
  • Card manages the CL Card used with Ledger
  • The button in the bottom left corner collapses the menu to give you more workspace, or expands it again to show the full menu names

Referral (formerly Refer a Friend) and Ledger Recover are no longer in the left menu. They have moved to the Profile menu in the top right corner.

3. Main area in the middle

This is the main workspace. Scroll down to see it in this order:

  • Portfolio balance shown in your chosen currency, with the day's percentage change
  • Shortcut buttons Receive, Buy, Sell and Send let you start a transaction right from here
  • Market gives a market overview of the assets that are moving and how their prices have changed. You can switch to a Trending view
  • Perpetuals is an entry point to leveraged trading. It is a service from a third-party provider and has nothing to do with keeping your assets safe
  • Crypto lists the assets you hold, with price, amount and value
  • Stablecoins and Stocks list the price-pegged assets and stocks you hold, further down
  • Crypto addresses shows the address for each asset, at the very bottom

4. Swap box on the right

Use it to exchange assets without leaving the Home page. Choose the asset to swap from and the asset to swap to, enter the amount, then click View quotes to see the rates providers offer. Then approve the transaction on your Ledger device screen, just as you do every time you send.

On a phone

The screen has three parts, numbered in the image: the top bar, the main area and the menu bar at the bottom.

1. Top bar

Icon Name What it does
Person icon that opens the Profile menu in the Ledger Wallet app Profile The main menu, as on the computer, giving access to Settings, Notifications, Ledger Recover, Help, Referral and My Ledger
Compass icon that opens Discover in the Ledger Wallet app on a phone Discover Opens connected external apps. On a phone it is in the top bar, not in the bottom menu
Magnifying glass icon for searching assets in the Ledger Wallet app Search assets Search for assets or connected apps
Clock icon that opens transaction history in the Ledger Wallet app on a phone Transactions Opens your full transaction history

2. Main area

The content is the same as on the computer, but arranged vertically.

  • Portfolio balance at the top in large type, with the day's percentage change
  • Shortcut buttons Receive, Swap, Buy and Send
  • Market gives a market overview and the assets that are moving
  • Crypto, Stablecoins and Stocks list what you hold. Scroll down to see everything
  • Crypto accounts shows your saved accounts, at the very bottom

3. Bottom menu bar

  • Home shows your total balance, asset allocation and recent transactions
  • Swap exchanges assets through a provider in the app
  • Earn earns rewards by staking assets
  • Card manages the CL Card used with Ledger

How the computer and phone versions differ

Both versions do almost exactly the same things. What differs is where some menus and buttons are. The first three rows of this table are the ones people most often cannot find.

What you are looking for On a computer On a phone
Accounts Left menu No separate menu. Open it from the list in the main area
Discover Left menu Top bar
Swap Has its own box, always on the right A shortcut button and the bottom menu
The Refresh and hide balance buttons On the top bar No separate buttons. Pull the page down to refresh instead
Export history as a CSV file Yes, on the Transactions page You can view history, but there is no export button

Which menus you really need, and which you can skip

The screen looks busy, but if you bought the device to store assets, day-to-day use comes down to just a few places.

  • Must know: the Receive and Send buttons and the Accounts page. These three are for receiving, sending and checking the balance of each asset.
  • Must know: My Ledger in the Profile menu is where you install network apps and update the firmware.
  • Can skip: Swap, Earn, Buy, Sell, Card and Discover are all services from third-party providers connected in the app. Keeping your assets safe does not depend on any of them.
  • Can skip: Ledger Recover is a paid monthly service. You can use every feature of the device without subscribing.

Every time you send or swap, read the device screen, not the app screen. Whichever button in the app you start from, the device signs what is shown on its own screen, not what the app shows, because that is the only screen that software on your computer cannot change.

Frequently asked questions

Are Ledger Live and Ledger Wallet the same app?

Yes, it is the same app. It was renamed from Ledger Live to Ledger Wallet. If screenshots in older guides, or the app on your device, still show the old name, it is the same app.

If I delete the app or change computers, will I lose my assets?

No. The app does not store your assets. They are on the network, and the keys are in your Ledger device. Install the app again and connect the same device, and your accounts and balances come back.

What should I do if the balance in the app is wrong or has not appeared?

On a computer, click the Refresh button on the top bar. On a phone, pull the page down to refresh. If you have just received a transfer, you may need to wait for the network to confirm it before the balance appears.

Why can I not find the Accounts menu on my phone?

On a phone there is no separate Accounts menu in the bottom bar. Scroll through the list in the main area and tap the asset you want to open that asset's account page.

Can I hide my balance when I open the app in public?

Yes, on a computer. Click the eye icon on the top bar, and balances are replaced with asterisks until you click it again.

Can I export my transaction history for accounting?

Yes, on a computer. Open the Transactions page from the top bar and export it as a CSV file. On a phone you can view history, but there is no export button.

Does my Ledger device have to stay plugged in the whole time the app is open?

No. You can check balances and history without plugging it in. You only need it connected when you request a receiving address, when you send and when you approve a transaction, because those steps need the device to sign.

Do I need to use Swap, Earn or Card?

No. They are all services from third-party providers connected in the app. If you bought the device only to store assets, Receive, Send and Accounts are all you need.

Will SIAMBC or Ledger ever ask for my recovery phrase?

Neither of us will ever ask, under any circumstances, and nobody has any reason to know your recovery phrase. Anyone who asks for it is a scammer. No exceptions. That applies whether they claim to be SIAMBC staff, use Ledger's name, or say it is for a warranty claim, identity verification, a firmware update or account recovery.

Summary

The Ledger Wallet screen looks full of options, but what you really need is Receive, Send and Accounts, plus My Ledger in the Profile menu for installing network apps and updating firmware. The other menus are optional services from third-party providers that you can use or ignore. And whichever button you press, what decides where your money goes is the device screen, not the app screen.
