How to Set Up and Use SafePal S1 Pro

SafePal S1 Pro works on the same principle as the S1: no internet, no Bluetooth, and communication by scanning QR codes only. What it adds is a body of tempered glass and aluminum and a bigger 500mAh battery. The screen is the same 1.3-inch color screen as the S1, and it is operated with buttons, not by touch. This guide goes screen by screen, from unboxing to finishing pairing with SafePal App.

Before you start, what you need

  • SafePal S1 Pro with its charging cable
  • A phone that can run SafePal App, either iPhone or Android
  • Paper and a pen for writing down the recovery phrase
  • About 20 minutes, somewhere nobody can see your screen

Before you start setup A new device never comes with a wallet already on it. If it opens with a wallet already set up, or a recovery phrase is written out for you in the box, stop immediately, do not transfer any assets in, and contact SIAMBC. The recovery phrase must only ever be created on your own device.

Unbox and get to know the device

1. Check everything is in the box

The box contains the S1 Pro device, a cleaning cloth, two stickers, a USB cable, three cards for writing down the recovery phrase, a user manual and an app download card. Check that the box and the anti-counterfeit sticker show no signs of being opened, and that every recovery phrase card is blank.

2. Learn where the buttons are before you start

The front has the screen, and a four-way directional pad surrounding the OK button in the center, while the camera is on the back, not the front, so when you scan a QR code you turn the back of the device toward the phone screen. The power button is on the side edge and the charging port is on the bottom edge.

Check the device is genuine

Before you create a wallet, always check the device on SafePal's verification web page. This tells you the device is genuine and has never been activated before. The S1 Pro is checked exactly the same way as the S1.

3. Start the check on the device

Turn the device on and choose a language. You then reach the Device Authentication screen, which tells you to scan a QR code with your phone. Press Next and the device shows a QR code. If you turn the device on and never see this screen, it may have been used before: stop and contact SIAMBC.

4. Scan the QR code and enter the 6-digit number

Use your phone's camera to scan the QR code on the device. Your phone opens a SafePal web page. The S1 Pro shows a 6-digit number: type that number into the web page and tap Authenticate. Make sure the web address is a SafePal domain before you type anything.

5. Read the result

If the device is genuine and has never been activated, the web page says it is authentic and shows the device serial number and the date and time of its first authentication. If the result says it has been activated before, or the device cannot be found, stop using that device and contact SIAMBC immediately. If it passes, tap Confirm and continue and scan the QR code on the web page with the device to activate it.

6. Download SafePal App

Install it from the App Store or Google Play only, or scan this Download SafePal App QR code. Never install from a link sent in a chat or from any other website.

8. Choose the number of words

The Choose No. of Mnemonic screen lets you choose 24, 12 or 18 words. Unless you have a specific reason, just choose 24. Remember this number, because when you recover the wallet you must choose the same one.

9. Write the recovery phrase on paper

The Write down all words in order screen shows the words with their numbers. Write them on the card from the box, in order, and scroll until you have seen every word. Check them once more before continuing, because the device will not show this phrase again.

10. Start the check

The device says there are two steps left, and the next one checks that you really wrote the words down correctly. Tap Next

12. Set a PIN

  • Do not open, modify or repair the device yourself. If anything seems wrong, contact SIAMBC.

  2. Receive a small amount first and check the balance shows correctly before transferring a large amount.
  3. Never tell anyone your PIN, and do not choose an easy-to-guess number such as a birthday or a sequence.

Frequently asked questions

How is the S1 Pro different from the S1?

They work in exactly the same way: no internet, no Bluetooth, and communication by QR code. The differences are that the S1 Pro has a body of tempered glass and aluminum and a bigger 500mAh battery. Both have the same 1.3-inch, 320 by 320 color screen.

What is a Passphrase, and do I need to set one?

It is an extra secret phrase added on top of the recovery phrase, which gives you a separate wallet even with the same recovery phrase. Most people do not need to set one. If you set one and forget it, you can never access that wallet, because it is not stored anywhere.

What is Seed Verification for?

It checks that the recovery phrase you wrote on paper really matches the one in the device, without wiping it. Do it once after setup, so you know now that you wrote it down correctly.

Can I charge it with a laptop charger?

No. The device is designed to take power from a DC 5V phone charger only. A laptop charger will damage the device.

Will SIAMBC or SafePal ever ask for my recovery phrase?

Neither of them will, under any circumstances, and nobody has any reason to know your recovery phrase. Anyone who asks for it is a scammer, no exceptions, whether they claim to be SIAMBC staff, use the SafePal name, or say it is for a warranty claim, identity verification, a firmware update or account recovery.

Summary

The S1 Pro has a metal and glass body and a bigger battery than the S1, but every security principle is the same: check the box contents before you start, write the recovery phrase on paper and keep it apart from the device, and remember that the app is only a screen. Every approval always happens on the device.
