How to Check That Your Trezor Is Genuine

Before you set up the device and before you move any assets onto it, take about five minutes to check that it is genuine and that nobody has opened and set it up already. This page goes through what to look at one item at a time. What applies to every model is at the top, and what differs is split into tabs by model below.

Four things to check on every model

1. The box and seal show no sign of being opened

Check the foil wrapping the box, the seal and the box itself for tears, fresh glue or signs of being resealed. The details differ by model, so see the tab for your model below.

2. Everything is in the box, and the wallet backup cards are blank

The cards for writing down your wallet backup must be blank, with nothing written or printed on them. You write on them yourself during setup, when the device creates a new set of words.

If a card already has words on it, do not use that device under any circumstances. This is the most common trick with fake and tampered second-hand devices. The seller sets up the device and sends you words they already know. As soon as you move assets in, they can take them out. Do not continue setup, do not move anything in, and contact SIAMBC.

3. A new device leaves the factory without firmware

No Trezor comes with firmware installed from the factory. During setup, Trezor Suite installs the latest version for you. If you plug the device in and find firmware already installed, someone has used it before. Do not use it.

4. The device checks the firmware signature every time you plug it in

The bootloader on the device checks the firmware signature every time it connects. Trezor Suite only works with firmware signed by SatoshiLabs. If the signature is not valid, both the device and Suite show a warning.

Where you bought it is part of the check The very first question on Trezor Suite's check screen is whether you bought the device from the official shop or a trusted reseller. SIAMBC is a reseller in Thailand that orders directly from the manufacturer, never through the second-hand market.

Checks by model

Choose the tab that matches your device. Each model has a different seal, different box contents and a different way to confirm it is genuine.

How to check that a Trezor Safe 7 is genuine

The Safe 7 box is wrapped in plastic foil with a Trezor logo watermark repeated across it. When you receive it, the foil must still cover the box completely with no tears.

Inside the box you should find all of the following: the device with a protective sticker on the screen, a Get started pack with two 20-word wallet backup cards, the Get started guide, a security notice and stickers, and a USB-C to USB-C cable.

The Safe 7 holographic seal covers the USB-C port at the bottom of the device. It must be clean and firmly attached, with no tears or glue residue. Peeling it off may leave a VOID mark behind, but because the body is aluminum, the mark usually does not stay.

Two secure elements, on this model only

The Safe 7 uses two secure elements, TROPIC01 and OPTIGA Trust M, which is certified CC EAL6+, with the device's main microcontroller coordinating between the two chips. When you first plug the device in, all three work together to check that it is genuine and has not been tampered with. The other models in the Safe family have a single secure element.

How to check that a Trezor Safe 5 is genuine

The Safe 5 box is also wrapped in plastic foil, which can be either clear or watermarked. Both are genuine. What matters is that the foil is still in place with no tears.

The holographic seal covers the USB-C port and must be clean and firmly attached. Peeling it off leaves a VOID mark on the device. This is normal and designed that way on purpose, to show the seal has been removed. It is not a defect.

One secure element

The Safe 5 uses one OPTIGA Trust M secure element working alongside the device's main chip. When you first plug it in, the two check authenticity together at the hardware level, and the result appears in Trezor Suite.

How to check that a Trezor Safe 3 is genuine

The Safe 3 box can be wrapped in either clear or watermarked foil. Both are genuine.

The box contains the device, with a holographic seal over the USB-C port and a black sticker wrapped around the front and back that you peel off before use, a Get started pack with two wallet backup cards, a guide, a security notice, stickers and a USB-C to USB-C cable.

The Safe 3 comes with two kinds of card, and both are correct. Devices from 2023 come with 12-word cards printed with recovery seed, while 2024 devices come with 20-word cards printed with wallet backup. The device is the same, and it can use a 12, 20 or 24-word wallet backup whichever card you received.

The Safe 3 holographic seal comes in two versions depending on when the device was made. The original version looks like this.

Devices made from April 2024 onward use a new seal that adds the UK CA mark and sticks more firmly. Both versions are genuine. What you need to check is that the seal is intact and has not been peeled.

One secure element

The Safe 3 uses one OPTIGA Trust M secure element working alongside the main chip. When you first plug it in, the two check authenticity together at the hardware level.

A slightly rough edge is not a sign of tampering

Some Safe 3 devices have a slightly rough spot on the edge. It is a mark left by the plastic injection point during molding, not a sign that the device has been pried open or tampered with.

How to check that a Trezor Model T is genuine

This model has no secure element. The Model T came out before Trezor started adding secure elements in the Safe family, so there is no hardware-level authenticity check. Check the box, the seal, the box contents and the firmware signature check instead. Trezor no longer sells this model, but maintains it until at least 2031 and releases security patches until at least 2036.

The clearest difference from the other models: the Model T box has no seal on it. On this model the holographic seal is on the device itself, over the port at the bottom. It must not be torn or missing.

The box contains the device, a magnetic dock, a USB type C cable, two 12-word wallet backup cards, a getting started card and four stickers.

A blank screen out of the box is normal. The Model T has no built-in battery, so the screen shows nothing until you connect it to a computer. It is not broken and it is not a sign of a problem.

The box has changed design twice

In 2018 the logo on the box changed from embossed to printed black, the product name was added to the top edge, the inner box gained a green guide line showing where to open it, and the wallet backup card changed from a single card to a small booklet.

In 2021 it changed again, with a shorter barcode on the back of the box. If your box does not match the pictures exactly, it may simply come from stock made in a different year. That does not automatically mean it is fake.

How to check that a Trezor Model One is genuine

This model has no secure element. The Model One is Trezor's very first model. It has no secure element and no hardware-level authenticity check, so check the box, the seal, the box contents and the firmware signature check instead. Trezor no longer sells this model, but maintains it until at least 2031 and releases security patches until at least 2036.

Unlike the Model T, the Model One box has silver seals on both sides and an extra layer of thin plastic foil. The box is glued shut so firmly that it cannot be opened without tearing it. Check that the seals on both sides are intact, not broken and not missing.

The box contains the device, a USB type B cable, a getting started card, two 24-word wallet backup cards and four stickers.

A blank screen out of the box is normal. The Model One has no built-in battery either, so the screen shows nothing until you connect it to a computer.

The box has changed design several times

In 2016 the text on the box changed from The Hardware Bitcoin Wallet to The original hardware wallet, the logo changed from TREZOR The Bitcoin Safe to just TREZOR, the box grew to 100 x 100 x 13 mm, and the web address in the guide moved to trezor.io/start.

The back of the 2016 box added a barcode sticker with a UPC code and a CAUTION notice saying that if you suspect someone else has opened the box, you should keep it as it is and contact support.

In 2018 the typeface and layout of the USER MANUAL guide and of the wallet backup card printed with YOUR PERSONAL RECOVERY SEED were redesigned.

In 2021 the front of the box added the words By SatoshiLabs in the bottom left corner, the device illustration changed, and the logo and text were moved closer to the center.

The back of the 2021 box still has the CAUTION notice about the box being opened. The text at the bottom was rearranged, a TREZOR logo was added on the back with the barcode under it, and there is a line reading TO START USING TREZOR GO TO that points to trezor.io/start.

A crooked barcode sticker does not mean it is fake

Devices sold through Amazon have an extra white EAN barcode sticker on the box, covering the line that reads TREZOR Black. Because it is applied by hand, it may be slightly crooked. That is not a sign the box has been opened.

The holographic seal comes in several versions

The seal on the Model One box has changed several times over the years, and because shops may still hold older stock, you can come across different versions.

The three boxes in this picture all say The original hardware wallet, but they use different seals, and all of them are genuine. What to check is not the pattern on the seal, but that the seal is intact and untorn when the box reaches you.

What to do next

  1. Once every check is done, plug the device into your computer or phone and let Trezor Suite guide you through setup.
  2. Do not skip the authenticity check in Trezor Suite during setup. It takes less than a minute, and it can only be done before you put any assets on the device.
  3. Write the wallet backup the device creates on the cards from the box, and store them separately from the device.
  4. Keep the box and seal for a while in case you need to make a warranty claim or send photos for a check.

Frequently asked questions

I peeled the seal and a VOID mark was left behind. Does that mean the device was opened before?

No. The seal leaves the VOID mark on purpose when it is peeled, to show it has been removed. If you peeled it yourself, that is normal. What to watch for is receiving a device that already shows this mark before you have peeled anything. On the Safe 7 the mark usually does not stay, because the body is aluminum.

The screen shows nothing when I unbox it. Is the device broken?

On a Model T or Model One this is normal, because these two models have no built-in battery. The screen shows nothing until you connect it to a computer.

My wallet backup card already has words written on it. What should I do?

Stop immediately. Do not set up that device, and never move any assets onto it. The cards that come with a new device are always blank, because your wallet backup must be created on your own device during setup. If words are already written, someone else knows them. Contact SIAMBC with photos of the box and the card.

My Trezor Safe 3 came with 12-word cards, not 20-word ones. Did I get the wrong model?

No. Safe 3 devices from 2023 come with 12-word cards and 2024 devices come with 20-word cards. The device is identical in every way and supports 12, 20 and 24-word wallet backups, whichever card you received.

My holographic seal does not look like the one in the pictures

The seal has changed several times across production periods, and shops may hold stock from different periods, so you can come across different versions. What to check is that the seal is intact, firmly attached, and shows no tears or signs of peeling, not whether the pattern matches the picture.

Trezor Suite showed a warning when I plugged the device in. What should I do?

Do not continue setup and do not move any assets onto it. Take a screenshot of the warning, along with photos of the box and seal, and contact SIAMBC. We handle warranty and exchanges in Thailand directly.

Will SIAMBC and Trezor ask for my wallet backup?

Neither will ask, under any circumstances, and nobody has any reason to know your wallet backup. Anyone who asks is a scammer, no exceptions, whether they claim to be SIAMBC staff, use Trezor's name, or say it is for a warranty claim, identity check, firmware update or account recovery.

Summary

Three things not to miss: the wallet backup cards must be blank, the seal must be intact with no sign of peeling, and the device must not have firmware installed already. If any one of these fails, stop and contact SIAMBC, and do not move any assets in, whatever the circumstances.

If you are unsure about anything, send photos of the box, seal and cards to SIAMBC and we will take a look. We handle usage questions, warranty and exchanges in Thailand.
