How to Set Up and Use Trezor Safe 5

Trezor Safe 5 can be set up for the first time on either a computer or an Android phone, and it takes about 15 minutes. The highlight of this model is its color touchscreen, so confirming actions, writing down your recovery phrase and setting a PIN all happen right on the device. This guide follows every step in the order of the current Trezor Suite screens, with the precautions to know before you move real assets in.

What you need before you start

  • Trezor Safe 5 and a USB-C cable
  • The recovery phrase card and a pen
  • A computer, or an Android phone with a USB-C port
  • About 15 minutes somewhere private

Never save your recovery phrase on a digital device: Do not photograph it, type it into a phone, send it in a chat or keep it in the cloud. Your recovery phrase must be read from the Trezor screen and written down offline only.

How to set up Trezor Safe 5 on a computer

1. Install Trezor Suite

Download Trezor Suite directly from trezor.io/start. Finish the installation, then open the app. Avoid downloading it from ads or from links that people pass around, because they may be fake software.

2. Connect and check the device

Connect Trezor Safe 5 to your computer with the USB-C cable. When Trezor Suite finds the device, choose Set up my Trezor, then check that the holographic seal and the packaging show no signs of having been opened. If you see anything unusual, stop before installing the firmware.

3. Install the firmware

A new device has no firmware yet. Choose Standard if you want to use multiple coins, or Bitcoin-only if you plan to use only Bitcoin, then click Install firmware. Wait until it installs and the device restarts. Do not unplug the cable while this is happening.

4. Check authenticity and learn the touchscreen

Trezor Suite checks the Secure Element to confirm that the device is genuine and has not been modified. Click Start and follow the screens on the device. Once it passes, a tutorial called Know your Trezor lets you try tapping, swiping and holding on the touchscreen.

5. Create a new wallet

Choose Create a new wallet for a device that has never been set up. If you want to use an existing wallet again, choose Recover and use that wallet's recovery phrase.

The default Trezor Suite recommends is Single-share Backup with 20 words, which is a single recovery phrase. Click Create wallet, read the terms on the Trezor screen, then hold to confirm.

6. Write down the 20-word recovery phrase

Click Continue to wallet backup, read the warnings and tick every confirmation box, then click Create wallet backup. The device shows the backup words one at a time. Write down all 20 words in order. You can scroll back to check the spelling. When you finish, Trezor asks for some words at random positions to confirm you wrote them down correctly.

7. Set a PIN on the Trezor screen

Click Set PIN and type the PIN directly on the Trezor Safe 5 touchscreen. It can be 4 to 50 digits long. Choose a number you can remember but that is hard to guess, and do not use your birthday or simple sequences. After 16 wrong attempts, the device wipes the wallet data from itself, and recovering it requires your 20-word recovery phrase.

8. Go to the main screen and turn on coins

Click Get started or Go to Dashboard and choose the coins you want to use. From here you can receive, send and view your accounts in Trezor Suite, and every important transaction must be checked and confirmed on the Trezor Safe 5 screen.

What to do after setup

  1. Use the recovery phrase check in Trezor Suite to confirm you wrote down every word in the right order.
  2. Receive a small amount of coins first, and compare the receiving address on the computer screen with the one on the Trezor screen.
  3. Keep your recovery phrase separate from the device, and never let anyone else see or copy it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Trezor Safe 5 be set up on an iPhone?

No. iPhone does not support connecting Trezor Safe 5 over USB-C. Setup and confirming transactions require a computer or an Android phone with USB-C.

Do I need to enter the 20-word recovery phrase in the app?

No, and you should not enter it in any app, website or computer. Creating and checking the recovery phrase happens on the Trezor screen only.

What should I do if the receiving address on the computer does not match the one on the Trezor?

Do not send anything. Cancel the transaction and check your computer first. The address you can trust is the one shown and confirmed on the Trezor screen.

What happens if I enter the wrong PIN many times?

Trezor Safe 5 allows 16 wrong attempts. Once you reach that, the device wipes the wallet data from itself, and you need your recovery phrase to recover the wallet.

Will SIAMBC or Trezor ever ask for my recovery phrase?

Neither will ever ask, under any circumstances, and nobody has any reason to know your recovery phrase. Anyone who asks for it is a scammer, no exceptions, whether they claim to be SIAMBC staff, use Trezor's name, or say it is for a warranty claim, identity verification, a firmware update or account recovery.

Summary

Setting up Trezor Safe 5 correctly starts with the official Trezor Suite, checking the device's condition and authenticity, writing down the 20-word recovery phrase from the Trezor screen and setting a PIN that is hard to guess. Once all that is done, check your recovery phrase and send a small test amount before real use.
