How to Set Up and Use Trezor Safe 3
First-time setup of Trezor Safe 3 takes about 15 minutes. You can do it two ways: with Trezor Suite on a computer, or with the Trezor Suite app on an Android phone that has a USB-C port. This guide walks through the steps in order, from checking the device, installing firmware and creating a wallet to writing down your recovery phrase and setting a PIN, and points out what to watch for along the way.
Choose how to set up
What you need before you start
- Trezor Safe 3 and a USB-C cable
- The recovery phrase card from the box, and a pen
- A computer, or an Android phone with USB-C
- About 15 minutes, somewhere nobody else can see the device screen
Cards in some older boxes may use the term Recovery Seed, while newer boxes use Wallet Backup. Both mean the same thing: the set of words used to recover your wallet if the device is lost, damaged or wiped.
Important: Your recovery phrase must appear on the Trezor screen and be written on paper or a metal plate only. Never photograph it, never save it on a phone, computer, email or online storage, and never enter these words on any website or app.
How to set up Trezor Safe 3 on a computer
1. Download and open Trezor Suite
Go to trezor.io/start and download Trezor Suite for your operating system. When the installation is done, open the app. Download it directly from the Trezor website to avoid fake software.
2. Connect the device and check it before setup
Connect Trezor Safe 3 to your computer with the USB-C cable. When Trezor Suite finds the device, you will see the message Connect & unlock your Trezor and a security check page for the device. Click Set up my Trezor when you are ready to start.

Check that you bought it from a trusted source, that the holographic seal is not torn or opened, and that the packaging has not been opened before. If anything looks wrong, stop setup and contact SIAMBC right away.

3. Install the firmware
A new Trezor leaves the factory without firmware. This is a security design choice, not a fault. You can choose between the Standard firmware, which supports multiple coins, and Bitcoin-only for anyone who only wants to use Bitcoin. Then click Install firmware and wait until the device restarts. Do not unplug the cable while this is happening.

4. Check that the device is genuine
After the firmware is installed, Trezor Suite checks the authenticity of the Secure Element to confirm that the device was made by Trezor and has not been modified. Click Start and follow the instructions on the Trezor screen. Once it passes, a tutorial called Know your Trezor lets you try both buttons. You can follow the tutorial or skip it.

5. Create a new wallet
If you are setting up a new device, choose Create a new wallet. If you have the recovery phrase for an existing wallet and want to use it again, choose Recover instead. Do not create a new wallet if you mean to recover an existing one.

Trezor Safe 3 may show a 12-word or a 20-word recovery phrase, depending on when it was made. Devices from 2023 that come with a Recovery Seed card usually default to 12 words, while devices from 2024 onward with a Wallet Backup card usually default to 20 words. Both protect and recover your wallet, but the 20-word type can be changed to a multi-share backup later.

Choose the backup type you want, click Create wallet, read the terms on the device screen, then use the right button to confirm creating the wallet.

6. Write down the complete recovery phrase in the right order
Click Continue to wallet backup, read the warnings in Trezor Suite and tick every confirmation box, then click Create wallet backup. The backup words appear on the Trezor screen one at a time. Use the buttons to scroll through them and write them on the card in the order shown.

When you have written them all down, the device asks for some words at random positions to test that you wrote them correctly. If a spelling or the order is wrong, go back and check on the device before you finish this step.

7. Set a PIN
Click Set PIN and set the PIN on the device itself. Use the left and right buttons to move to the number you want, then press both buttons together to select it. The cursor position changes to reduce the risk of someone watching which buttons you press.
- It can be 4 to 50 digits long
- Avoid sequences, birthdays, or numbers other people can easily guess
- After 16 wrong attempts, the wallet data on the device is wiped, and you need your recovery phrase to get it back

8. Turn on the coins you want
When setup is complete, click Get started or Go to Dashboard and choose the coins you want to use. You can add or remove coins later in Trezor Suite Settings.

How to set up Trezor Safe 3 on an Android phone
Trezor Safe 3 can connect to an Android phone with a USB-C cable. iPhone does not support connecting Trezor Safe 3 over USB-C, so you need a computer to set it up. With the app on an iPhone, you can only add view-only accounts using public information.
1. Install the Trezor Suite app
Download the Trezor Suite app from Google Play. When you open the app, you can choose whether to share anonymous usage data. This choice does not affect how the wallet works. You can then turn on app lock with your fingerprint or face right away, or turn it on later under Settings → Security

2. Connect Trezor Safe 3 to your phone
Plug the USB-C cable into the device and the phone. When the app finds the device, tap Let's get started, then check where you bought it, the holographic seal and the packaging as the app shows. If everything looks right, tap Yes

3. Install the firmware and check authenticity
Tap Install now and keep the app open until the installation finishes. The device restarts automatically. After that, follow the instructions on the Trezor so the authenticity check can run, then try the button tutorial or choose Skip tutorial if you already know it.

4. Create a wallet, write down the recovery phrase and set a PIN
Tap Get started to create a new wallet, or Recover if you want to recover an existing wallet. Choose the recovery phrase type the app recommends, then read and write down the words from the Trezor screen only. After the backup check is done, tap Set PIN and set the PIN with the buttons on the device.

5. Go to the main screen
When the app says setup is complete, tap Go to Dashboard. Before receiving coins, always check the receiving address on the Trezor screen, and send a small test amount first.

What to do after setup
- Use the recovery phrase check in Trezor Suite to make sure you wrote down every word in the right order.
- Receive a small amount of coins first, and check the address on the Trezor screen before you confirm, every time.
- Keep the device and the recovery phrase in separate places. If one is lost, the other can still be used to recover access.
Frequently asked questions
Does Trezor Safe 3 work with iPhone?
iPhone does not support connecting Trezor Safe 3 to confirm transactions or to set up the device. You need to set it up on a computer, or use an Android phone with USB-C.
Why does a new device have no firmware?
Trezor deliberately ships its devices without firmware installed. You install the latest version through Trezor Suite the first time, and the device's authenticity is checked after installation.
If I forget my PIN, will I lose my money?
Your assets are not stored on the device. If the device has to be wiped, you can recover the wallet with the recovery phrase you wrote down correctly. But if you have neither a working PIN nor the recovery phrase, you cannot get back into the original wallet.
Will SIAMBC or Trezor ask for my recovery phrase?
Never, under any circumstances. Genuine staff will never ask you to send a photo of your recovery phrase, type it, or read it out to them. If anyone asks for it, treat it as a scam and stop contacting them at once.
Summary
The heart of setting up Trezor Safe 3 is downloading Trezor Suite from the official source, checking the device's condition and authenticity, writing down the complete recovery phrase from the device screen, and keeping it offline. After setup, check your recovery phrase once more before moving large amounts of assets into the wallet.
See the product details at Trezor Safe 3, or contact SIAMBC if you would like help checking the steps before you start using it.
