How to Set Up and Use Trezor Model T

Trezor Model T is Trezor's first model with a color touchscreen, so everything secret is entered directly on the device, including your PIN and confirming your recovery phrase. It connects with a USB-C cable, so it works with computers and Android phones, but it does not work with iPhone. This guide is split into two tabs, so pick the one that matches the device you have.

What you need before you start

  • Trezor Model T and the USB-C cable from the box
  • A computer that can run Trezor Suite, or an Android phone with a USB-C port
  • The recovery phrase card from the box, and a pen
  • About 15 minutes, somewhere nobody can see your screen

Before you open the box Check that the holographic seal and the box show no signs of tampering. The recovery phrase card in the box must be blank. If words are already written on it, or the device powers on with a wallet already on it, stop right away, do not send any assets to it, and contact SIAMBC.

Trezor has discontinued this model, but it will be supported for years Trezor has announced that it will keep supporting this model until at least 2031 and will release essential security patches until at least 2036. The device therefore still works normally and still receives updates. If you want a model that is still in production, look at the Trezor Safe family instead.

What this model works with

  • Computer Fully supported through the Trezor Suite desktop app
  • Android Works through the Trezor Suite mobile app, connected with a USB-C cable
  • iPhone Cannot be set up, because iOS does not let Trezor devices exchange data over a USB-C cable, and Model T has no Bluetooth

If you only use an iPhone, look at a model with Bluetooth, such as Trezor Safe 7. Not sure which model suits you? Message SIAMBC before you buy.

Set up on a computer

1. Install and open Trezor Suite

Type trezor.io/start into the address bar yourself and download the desktop version. Do not click links in emails or ads on a search results page. Once it is installed, open the app.

2. Plug in the device and check it

Plug Model T into your computer with the USB-C cable. Once it connects, the app opens the Device security check screen. Go through the checklist on screen, then click Set up my Trezor

3. Install the firmware

The Install firmware screen lets you choose between Standard for multiple coins and Bitcoin-only for Bitcoin alone. Then click install and wait until it finishes. The device restarts by itself.

Trezor Suite Install firmware screen before the first firmware installation

A new device comes without firmware, and that is normal Trezor ships its devices without firmware installed. Trezor Suite installs it during first-time setup. This is by design, to make sure the device has never been set up by anyone before.

4. Create a new wallet

Click Create a new wallet if this is your first device, or Recover wallet if you want to recover an existing wallet from a recovery phrase you already have.

5. Choose how many words your recovery phrase has

On the Wallet backup type screen, the default is 12 words, which is fine unless you have a specific reason to change it. Then click Create wallet. The device shows the terms of use, so hold your finger on the touchscreen to confirm.

6. Read the warnings before writing down your recovery phrase

Go back to the app and click Continue to wallet backup. The app shows what you need to know. Read all of it and tick the checkboxes, then click Create wallet backup.

Your recovery phrase appears only on the device screen Write it on the card from the box, in order. Never photograph it, and never type it into a computer or phone. You may type the words into Trezor Suite only when the device screen tells you to. There are fake websites and apps that look very much like the real thing, waiting to capture these words. SIAMBC never knows your recovery phrase and cannot recover it for you. Nobody can.

7. Write down your recovery phrase and confirm it

The device shows the words one at a time on the touchscreen. Use the up and down arrows to scroll, and you can go back to check the spelling. Write them on the card in order until you have them all. When you are done, tap Continue. The device then asks you to pick some of the words to confirm you wrote them down correctly. All of this happens on the device screen, and you do not type anything into the computer.

8. Set a PIN

The app asks you to set a PIN. Click Set PIN, then tap the numbers directly on the device's touchscreen. Unlike Trezor One, where you look at a grid on the device and click on the computer, with this model you enter it right on the device.

PIN rules

  • It can be anywhere from 4 to 50 digits long
  • Avoid sequences like 12345 and numbers that can be guessed from your personal details, such as your birthday
  • You can change it later under Settings, then Device
  • After 16 wrong attempts, the device wipes the wallet from itself Your assets are still safe and can be recovered with the recovery phrase. But if you do not have the recovery phrase either, you will never be able to access that wallet again.

9. Setup complete

You are now on the Dashboard. Click Get started to turn on the coins you want.

Set up on an Android phone

This way uses the Trezor Suite mobile app, connected with a USB-C cable. Your phone must have a USB-C port, and it is best to charge both devices first so neither shuts down halfway. iPhone cannot use this method, because iOS does not support data connections with Trezor devices.

1. Install and open the Trezor Suite app

Search for Trezor Suite on Google Play and install it, then open the app. You will be asked whether to share anonymous usage data, and whether to turn on unlocking the app with your fingerprint or face. Neither is required, and you can change both later in the settings menu.

2. Plug in the device and run the Security check

Plug Model T into your phone with the USB-C cable. The screen shows that the device is ready to set up, so tap Let's get started. The app then asks you to confirm three things: that you bought it from a trusted source, that the holographic seal is intact, and that the box shows no signs of having been opened. If all three are true, tap Yes. If you are unsure about any of them, stop and contact SIAMBC first.

3. Install the firmware

Tap Install now and wait until the installation finishes. Do not close the app or unplug the cable while this is happening. The device restarts by itself when it is done, then tap Continue.

5. Read the explanation of the recovery phrase

The app takes you through three short screens. The first says A wallet backup is a list of words, meaning the set of words used to recover access to your assets. The second explains when you need it, and the last, Always protect your wallet backup, stresses that you must keep it safe. Read them all before you continue, because a mistake here cannot be undone.

6. Choose the number of words

All of this happens on the device screen, and you do not type anything into the phone.

8. Set a PIN

Tap Set PIN, then tap the numbers directly on the device's touchscreen. You will use this PIN to unlock the device every time you connect it to a phone or computer.

What to do after setup

  1. Use the recovery phrase check in Trezor Suite to confirm you wrote down every word in the right order, so you find out now.
  2. Keep the card with your recovery phrase separate from the device, in a different place, and never let anyone photograph it.
  3. Receive a small amount first, and check the receiving address on the device screen before you confirm, every time.
  4. Never tell anyone your PIN, and never type your recovery phrase anywhere except when the device screen tells you to.

Frequently asked questions

Does Trezor Model T work with iPhone?

No. iOS does not let Trezor devices exchange data over a USB-C cable, and Model T has no Bluetooth, so you need a computer or an Android phone. If you use an iPhone, look at a model with Bluetooth, such as Trezor Safe 7.

How many words is the recovery phrase, and how is it different from Trezor One?

Model T defaults to 12 words, while Trezor One uses 24. In practice both are equally secure. What actually exposes a recovery phrase is photographing it or storing it on an internet-connected device, not the number of words.

How is setting the PIN different from Trezor One?

Model T has a touchscreen, so you enter the numbers right on the device. Trezor One has no touchscreen, so you look at where the numbers are on the device screen and click the same squares on the computer. The security result is the same: the computer never learns your real PIN.

What happens if I enter the wrong PIN many times?

After 16 wrong attempts, the device wipes the wallet from itself. This stops anyone from sitting down and guessing your PIN. Your assets are still safe because they are not stored on the device, and you can recover them with the recovery phrase you wrote down. But if you do not have the recovery phrase either, you will never be able to access that wallet again.

Can I still use this model now that it has been discontinued?

Yes, it works normally. Trezor states that it will keep supporting this model until at least 2031 and will release essential security patches until at least 2036. If you want a model that is still in production, look at the Trezor Safe family.

Will SIAMBC or Trezor ever ask for my recovery phrase?

Neither will ever ask, under any circumstances, and nobody has any reason to know your recovery phrase. Anyone who asks for it is a scammer, no exceptions, whether they claim to be SIAMBC staff, use Trezor's name, or say it is for a warranty claim, identity verification, a firmware update or account recovery.

Summary

The three things not to get wrong with Model T: download Trezor Suite only from trezor.io by typing the address yourself, write your recovery phrase on the card and keep it separate from the device, and remember that this model does not work with iPhone, so you need a computer or an Android phone.

If the installation fails or you get stuck anywhere, contact SIAMBC directly for help with using the device, warranty and product exchanges in Thailand.
