How to Send Bitcoin (BTC) from Ledger to Bitkub

This guide shows how to send Bitcoin from a Ledger device to your Bitkub account, with a real screenshot for every step. It works for every Ledger model: Nano S Plus, Nano X, Nano Gen5, Flex and Stax.

Warning: Never type your recovery phrase, or Seedword, of 12, 18 or 24 words into a computer or phone. If any app or website asks you to type it in, that app or website is definitely fake. Anyone who gets your recovery phrase can steal your money straight away, without needing your Hardware Wallet device at all.

What you need before you start

  • A Ledger device that is already set up, and your PIN. If you have not set it up yet, see How to Set Up and Use Ledger first
  • A computer with the Ledger Wallet app installed
  • The USB cable that came in the box
  • A phone logged in to the Bitkub app, with identity verification completed
  • Enough Bitcoin in your account for the amount you want to send plus the network fee
  • About 10 minutes, including the time waiting for the network to confirm

What you need to understand before you send

The destination address must be on the Bitcoin network only. Bitkub's deposit page asks you to choose both the asset and the network, and both must be BTC and BTC - Bitcoin. If you send Bitcoin to an address on another network, the money will not reach your account, and nobody can get it back for you, not Bitkub and not Ledger.

The screen on your Ledger device is the only information you can trust. Malware on a computer can change a copied address and change what the computer screen shows, but it cannot change what appears on the device screen. Every time before you sign, read the address on the device and compare it with the address in the Bitkub app, character by character, at least the first five and the last five characters.

The network fee is not anyone's service charge. It is paid to those who confirm transactions on the Bitcoin network, and it is deducted in Bitcoin on top of the amount you send. Ledger does not collect it, and neither does SIAMBC. Ledger Wallet lets you choose the speed: pay more and it arrives faster.

Open the deposit page and copy a fresh address every time you send. Do not use an address saved in a note, a file or a chat, because that is where the characters are easiest to tamper with. Also check the minimum amount on Bitkub's deposit page before you send. If you send less than the minimum, the money may not reach your account.

Using Ledger Wallet on a computer

1. Get your Bitcoin Address from the Bitkub app

Tap the small overlapping squares to copy the Bitcoin Address. Then find a way to get this Bitcoin Address onto the computer that has the Ledger Wallet app. Anyone who already uses Universal Clipboard between their computer and phone can do so, for example by sending an email.

2. Open the Ledger Wallet app on your computer

Paste the Bitcoin Address you copied from Bitkub here.

Or, if you have trouble copying the account number from Bitkub, you can scan the QR Code of the Bitcoin Address from this page with the Ledger Wallet app, by clicking this QR Code icon in Ledger Wallet.

Then hold the QR Code of the Bitcoin Address from Bitkub up to your computer's camera to scan it.

If your computer shows Transaction sent, the transfer has gone out successfully and you can click Close. The Bitcoin network takes 5 to 10 minutes to transfer it into Bitkub.

Each model confirms in a different way

The order of the device's prompts is the same on every model. What differs is how you press.

  • Nano S Plus and Nano X have two buttons beside the screen. Press one at a time to scroll, and press both together to confirm. The screen is small, so the address is shown in parts, and you need to scroll through all of it
  • Nano Gen5, Flex and Stax have touchscreens, so you tap and swipe on the screen. The screen is larger, so you see the address and amount together on one page, and you sign by touching and holding

How do I send somewhere other than Bitkub?

Every step is the same. Only the source of the address changes. Whether the destination is another exchange, a friend's wallet or another Ledger device of your own, get the receiving address from that destination, check that it is an address on the Bitcoin network, then carry on with steps 2 and 3.

If you are sending a large amount to an address you have never sent to before, send a small amount first, wait until it actually arrives, and then send the rest. The fee for a test transfer costs far less than sending to the wrong address.

What to do after sending

  1. Open the Bitkub app and check that the balance has appeared in your wallet. If it has not appeared yet, wait until the confirmations are complete.
  2. Go back to Ledger Wallet and check that the transaction status has changed from pending to successful.
  3. Unplug the cable, put the device away, and keep your recovery phrase in a different place from the device, as before.
  4. If you sent out the whole balance, do not delete the account from the app, because the old address can still receive.

Frequently asked questions

I sent it, but the money has not reached Bitkub yet. How long do I have to wait?

Usually 5 to 10 minutes. If you chose a low fee or the network is busy, it can take an hour or more. Click View details in Ledger Wallet to check the transaction status. As long as the transaction is on the network, your money has not gone anywhere. It just has not reached its turn to be confirmed yet.

I sent to the wrong address. Can I cancel it?

No. Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed, and there is no middleman who can cancel them. Not SIAMBC, not Ledger and not Bitkub. That is why you must compare the address on the device screen every time before you sign.

Can I send Bitcoin to an address on another network?

No. Each network uses a different address format. If you send across networks, the money will not reach the destination, and in most cases it cannot be recovered. On Bitkub's deposit page, you must choose BTC - Bitcoin only.

Who collects the fee?

Those who confirm transactions on the Bitcoin network receive it. Not Ledger, not SIAMBC and not Bitkub. The amount depends on how busy the network is at that moment and the speed you choose.

Does the Ledger device have to stay plugged in the whole time I am sending?

It must stay plugged in until Transaction sent appears, because the device signs the transaction. After that you can unplug it. A signed transaction travels across the network on its own without needing the device.

Can I send from my phone instead of a computer?

Yes. The Ledger Wallet mobile app can do the same, connecting over Bluetooth on models that support it, or by cable on Android. This guide uses a computer because that way works with every Ledger model.

Why do I have to click Allow secure connection every time?

It lets the device confirm that you opened this connection yourself, and not some other program on your computer. If this screen appears when you are not doing anything, reject it and unplug the cable straight away.

I want to receive into the device instead of sending out. How do I do that?

See the other guide: How to Send Bitcoin from Bitkub to Ledger Receiving does not require signing a transaction on the device, but there is one important step: you must check the receiving address on the device screen before you use it.

Will SIAMBC or Ledger ever ask for my recovery phrase?

Neither of us will ever ask, under any circumstances, and nobody has any reason to know your recovery phrase. Anyone who asks for it is a scammer. No exceptions. That applies whether they claim to be SIAMBC staff, use Ledger's name, or say it is for a warranty claim, identity verification, a firmware update or account recovery.

Summary

There are two points you cannot get wrong when sending from a Ledger. The first is choosing the right network: on Bitkub's deposit page it must be BTC - Bitcoin. The second is comparing the address on the device screen with the address in the Bitkub app before you sign, because the device screen is the only place malware cannot change. Once you are past these two points, all that is left is waiting for the network to confirm.
