How to Set Up and Use SafePal X1

SafePal X1 differs from the S1 and S1 Pro in that it does not use a camera to scan QR codes. Instead it talks to your phone over Bluetooth. The device has 12 buttons and a monochrome screen, so setup adds a step to activate the device with the app before you create a wallet. This guide goes screen by screen, from unboxing to adding the wallet to the app.

Before you start, what you need

  • SafePal X1 with its USB-C cable for charging
  • A phone with Bluetooth, either iPhone or Android
  • Paper and a pen for writing down the recovery phrase
  • About 20 minutes, somewhere nobody can see your screen

Before you start setup A new device never comes with a wallet already on it. If it opens with a wallet already set up, or a recovery phrase is written out for you in the box, stop immediately, do not transfer any assets in, and contact SIAMBC. The recovery phrase must only ever be created on your own device.

Unbox and get to know the device

1. Check everything is in the box

The box contains the X1 device, a cleaning cloth, two stickers, a USB-C cable, three cards for writing down the recovery phrase, a user manual and an app download card. Check that the box and the anti-counterfeit sticker show no signs of being opened, and that every recovery phrase card is blank.

2. Learn where the buttons are before you start

The monochrome screen is at the top. Below it are 12 round buttons in four rows of three. Up is the middle button of the second row (the 5 key). The row below has Left on the left (7) and Right on the right (9). The bottom row, from left to right, is Power Down and OK. Note that the power button and the OK button are both on the bottom row, but on opposite sides. The USB-C charging port is on the bottom edge of the device.

Install it from the App Store or Google Play only, or scan the QR code on SafePal's download page. Never install from a link sent in a chat.

Care and precautions

  • Charge only with a DC 5V phone charger. Do not use a laptop charger, as it will damage the device.
  • Use it between 0 and 45 degrees Celsius, and store it between -20 and 60 degrees Celsius.
  • Wipe it with a damp or soft cloth, and do not use harsh chemicals.
  • Do not open, modify or repair the device yourself. If anything seems wrong, contact SIAMBC.

What to do after setup

  1. Keep the paper with your recovery phrase apart from the device, in a different place, and never let anyone photograph it.
  2. Receive a small amount first and check the balance shows correctly before transferring a large amount.
  3. Never tell anyone your PIN, and do not choose an easy-to-guess number such as a birthday or a sequence.
  4. If you stop using the device or pass it on to someone else, always wipe it first with the Reset Wallet menu.

Frequently asked questions

The X1 uses Bluetooth. Is that safe?

Bluetooth is only used to send unsigned transactions into the device and to send signatures back out. The private key is never sent out, and every transaction must always be confirmed on the device first. If you want a device with no radio signals at all, the S1 and S1 Pro use a camera to scan QR codes instead.

How is the X1 different from the S1 and S1 Pro?

The X1 uses 12 buttons and a 1.8-inch monochrome screen, has no camera, and talks to your phone over Bluetooth. The S1 and S1 Pro have a 1.3-inch color screen and a camera on the back, and communicate only by scanning QR codes.

If the device is lost or broken, how do I recover?

Use the recovery phrase you wrote down to recover onto a new SafePal device, or into another brand of wallet that supports the same standard. Your assets are not stored in the device; the device only holds the key.

What do I do if I forget my PIN?

There is no way to recover a PIN. You must wipe the device and recover the wallet with your recovery phrase. If you do not have the recovery phrase either, you can never access that wallet again.

Will SIAMBC or SafePal ever ask for my recovery phrase?

Neither of them will, under any circumstances, and nobody has any reason to know your recovery phrase. Anyone who asks for it is a scammer, no exceptions, whether they claim to be SIAMBC staff, use the SafePal name, or say it is for a warranty claim, identity verification, a firmware update or account recovery.

Summary

The X1 adds a step to activate it with the app before you create a wallet, which also checks that the device has never been used. After that, the security principles are the same as every model: write the recovery phrase on paper, keep it apart from the device, and confirm every transaction on the device yourself.
