How to Set Up and Use Blockstream Jade

Blockstream Jade is a wallet made specifically for Bitcoin and Liquid, built by a team that has worked on Bitcoin infrastructure from the start. Both the hardware and the firmware are fully open source. There are three ways to set it up: with a cable to a computer, paired over Bluetooth with an iPhone, or by cable or Bluetooth with an Android phone. This guide puts each method in its own tab, so pick the one that matches the device you have.

Before you start: what you need

  • Blockstream Jade with the USB cable from the box
  • A computer, iPhone or Android phone that can run the Blockstream app
  • Paper and a pen for writing down your recovery phrase
  • About 20 minutes, somewhere nobody can see your screen

Before you set up Check that the box and packaging have no signs of being opened. A new device must always take you to the create-wallet screen. If you switch it on and find a wallet already set up, or a recovery phrase written out for you in the box, stop immediately, do not send any assets to it, and contact SIAMBC.

Jade supports Bitcoin and Liquid only It does not support Ethereum, it does not support USDT on Ethereum or Tron, and it does not support any other coin. Do not send other assets to this device's addresses, because they will not show up and there is no way to sign them out again. If you want to hold several networks, look at the other models in our store instead.

Get to know the device first

Jade has buttons in just two places. The first is the rocker button on the front, below the screen , used to scroll left and right to choose and pressed to confirm. You use this button for almost the entire setup. The second is the small button on the side edge, near the cable port , used to switch the device on and off. The cable port is on the bottom edge and is used both for charging and for connecting to a computer. These positions refer to the original Jade. Jade Plus and Jade Core have a different body, but the steps on the screen and in the app are exactly the same.

What to understand before you press anything

During setup, Jade asks you to choose two things together: the network , meaning Bitcoin or Liquid, and the security policy , meaning Singlesig or Multisig Shield.

Singlesig means a single signature: the key is with you alone and every decision is yours. Multisig Shield needs two signatures, yours and Blockstream's, to confirm together. The advantage is that if you lose the device, the other side can help you recover. The drawback is that you also depend on Blockstream's service. If you are not sure and want to hold everything yourself, choose Singlesig.

Each combination you choose is a separate wallet A different network and policy take you to a different wallet with its own set of addresses. If you come back later and choose something other than what you set up, you will see a zero balance even though your funds are all still there. Write down what you chose, and choose the same thing every time.

Set up on a computer

This method connects with a USB cable, needs no Bluetooth, and is the smoothest way to update the firmware. If you have just unboxed the device, we recommend starting here.

1. Install the app and the driver

Download the Blockstream app from Blockstream's official website only. Then install the driver listed on the download page as well. Without the driver, your computer may not see the device.

2. Open the app and choose Blockstream under Devices

Open the app and you will see a Devices section. Click the Blockstream logo.

3. Plug in the USB cable

Connect Jade to your computer with the cable from the box. If the app still cannot see the device, check that the driver is installed, then try a different cable or USB port first, because some charging cables only carry power and do not transfer data.

4. Update the firmware before setting up

Once the device shows up in the app, click Check for updates, then choose the latest version and confirm on the device with the rocker button below the screen. Do this while the device screen is still showing the Initialize button. If you have already gone past it, you will have to finish setup before you can update.

5. Choose the network and security policy

After the update, click Setup Jade and choose the network and policy you want to use, as explained above. The list shows Singlesig Bitcoin, Multisig Bitcoin and Multisig Liquid. This option sits under the Type heading on the login screen.

6. Choose New, then the number of words

The Welcome to Jade! screen asks whether you want to create a new wallet or restore an existing one. Choose New. The default is 12 words. If you want 24 words, go into the Advanced menu. Remember how many words you chose, because you will need the same number when you recover.

7. Write the recovery phrase on paper

The device shows the words one at a time with their numbers. Write them all on paper in order. Do not take a photo, and do not type them into any device.

Write the recovery phrase on paper only Never take a photo, never type it into a phone or computer, and never send it in a chat, not even a chat with yourself. SIAMBC never knows your recovery phrase and cannot recover it for you. Nobody can. Whoever gets this phrase gets all of your assets.

8. Check that you wrote it correctly

The Mnemonic check screen asks for random words one at a time, for example Confirm word 11. Use the rocker button below the screen to scroll to the word and choose the one that matches what you wrote. Read it from the paper, not from memory. If you cannot pick the right word, you wrote it down wrong, so start again now. It is far better to find out now than when you actually need it.

9. Set a six-digit PIN

On the Enter New PIN screen, enter a six-digit code, then enter it again to confirm. You use this code to unlock the device every time you open the wallet. Avoid sequential numbers or your birthday.

Set up on iPhone

On iPhone you can only connect over Bluetooth; there is no cable option. The steps on the device are the same as the other methods. Only the pairing is different.

1. Charge the device for two hours first

Plug Jade into a charger with the cable from the box and leave it for about two hours. Charge your iPhone too. Neither device should run out of power in the middle of setup. Install the Blockstream app in advance.

2. Switch the device on

Press and hold the power button on the side edge until the screen lights up. The Blockstream Jade logo appears first.

Set up on Android

On Android you can use either a cable or Bluetooth. If you want to update the firmware, we recommend connecting to a computer by cable instead, because it is more stable than updating through a phone.

1. Charge the device for two hours first

Plug Jade into a charger with the cable from the box and leave it for about two hours. Charge your phone too. Neither device should go to sleep or run out of power in the middle of setup. Install the Blockstream app in advance.

2. Switch the device on and press Initialize

How the three Jade models differ

The setup steps are identical for all of them, because they use the same app and the same firmware family. What differs is the hardware.

  • Jade: the original model, with a 240 mAh battery, USB-C and Bluetooth connections, and a plastic body.
  • Jade Plus adds a camera for air-gapped QR scanning, a bigger 280 mAh battery, a larger screen, and an optional metal body. It connects four ways: USB-C, Bluetooth, QR and SD card.
  • Jade Core has the same screen as Jade Plus but no camera and no battery, so there is no QR scanning mode and it must stay plugged in the whole time you use it. Skip the two-hour charging step, because there is nothing to charge.

What to do after setup

  1. Store the paper with your recovery phrase separately from the device, in a different place, and do not let anyone photograph it.
  2. Also note which network and policy you chose, because you must choose the same ones every time you open the wallet.
  3. Receive a small amount first and check that the balance shows correctly before you send a large amount.
  4. Compare the receiving address on the Jade screen with the one in the app every time before you make a real transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Jade work with iPhone?

Yes, but only over Bluetooth. There is no cable connection to an iPhone. On Android you can use either a cable or Bluetooth, and on a computer you use a USB cable.

Which coins does Jade support?

Bitcoin and Liquid only. It does not support Ethereum, USDT on other networks, or any other coin. If you want to hold several networks, this model is not the right fit.

Should I choose Singlesig or Multisig Shield?

Singlesig means you hold the key yourself: simple, and you depend on nobody. Multisig Shield also needs Blockstream's signature, so there is an extra way to recover if you lose the device, but it also means relying on their service. If you are not sure, choose Singlesig.

I opened the wallet and the balance is zero, but I had funds

This is usually because the network or policy you chose does not match the one from setup. Each combination is a separate wallet with its own set of addresses. Go back and choose the same one you used before. Your funds have not gone anywhere.

Jade has no separate security chip. Is it safe?

Jade uses what Blockstream calls a Virtual Secure Element instead of a closed chip inside the device. In return, all of its code is genuinely open to inspection, unlike a chip that nobody outside the manufacturer can look into. These are two different approaches, and neither is always better than the other.

What if I forget my PIN?

Use the recovery phrase you wrote down to restore the wallet. Your assets are not stored in the device; it only holds the key. But without the recovery phrase as well, you will never be able to open that wallet again.

Will SIAMBC or Blockstream ask for my recovery phrase?

Neither of them will, under any circumstances, and nobody has any reason to know your recovery phrase. Anyone who asks for it is a scammer, with no exceptions, whether they claim to be SIAMBC staff, use Blockstream's name, or say it is for a warranty claim or account recovery.

Summary

There are three things you must not get wrong with Jade: write the recovery phrase on paper and store it away from the device; remember which network and policy you chose, because choosing the wrong one shows a zero balance; and remember that this device only accepts Bitcoin and Liquid.
