Who Trezor is, and why the name keeps coming up

Trezor is a Czech company, and the first in the world to actually put a hardware wallet on sale — in 2014, before most people had heard the term.

It works the way every hardware wallet works: the private key stays on the device and never touches the internet, and every transfer has to be approved by pressing a button on the device itself. Malware on your computer cannot send on your behalf.

What keeps the name in circulation is not the spec sheet, it is the transparency. Trezor publishes both its firmware and its hardware design for outside inspection. In a category that mostly asks customers to take its word, being genuinely checkable is a clear position to take.

All five models side by side

Trezor currently sells five models. Here they are together; every price is what SIAMBC actually charges.

Read the secure element and send from an iPhone rows first. They eliminate options faster than anything else, and they are the two things most reviews skip.

What Trezor genuinely does well

Everything is open source. This goes first because most competitors cannot claim it. Firmware and hardware design are both open, so if there is a flaw, outside researchers have a chance of finding it before an attacker does.

The Safe line has a certified secure element. The Safe 3 uses the OPTIGA Trust M (V3) at CC EAL6+, the same tier Ledger uses in its flagships, and Trezor describes it as NDA-free — its behaviour can be examined rather than being hidden behind an agreement.

You can split the backup across several places. Few others offer this. The recovery phrase is divided into shares kept in different places, with a threshold for how many are needed: three shares that restore from any two, say. A single share that leaks means nothing on its own.

The casing is built to show interference. The Safe line uses anodized aluminum backplates, so a device that has been opened looks like it. That matters more than people assume, because the real risk with a hardware wallet is one that was tampered with before it reached you. How to check is in our guide to spotting a tampered device.

Passphrase support. Add one word of your own on top of the recovery phrase and you get a completely separate wallet. Someone who takes your words but not the passphrase finds an empty one. How to use it is in our passphrase guide.

The limitations worth knowing before you pay

The iPhone is the biggest limitation. Of the five models, only the Safe 7 at ฿11,900 can actually send from an iPhone, because it is the only one with Bluetooth. On the rest you can open the app and watch balances but not sign a transaction; for that you go back to a computer or an Android phone.

The Model One and Model T have no secure element. Trezor reserves that chip for the Safe line. Those two rely instead on auditable open firmware plus a PIN and passphrase. That does not make them unsafe, but it does mean that against someone who physically has your device and lab-grade equipment, they are easier to get into than a model with the chip.

The Model One is discontinued. Trezor's own page says it is no longer sold and points at the Safe 3, while promising maintenance until at least 2031 and critical security fixes until at least 2036. We still hold stock, so it remains the cheapest way in — just know what you are buying.

No model is fully air-gapped. If you want a wallet with no connection at all, talking purely in QR codes, Trezor does not offer that option.

So which model should you buy

On a budget, using a computer or Android? The Safe 3 at ฿3,690 is the answer we give most often: a CC EAL6+ secure element and everything else the Safe line has, at a price that is still reasonable.

Want a color screen and microSD? The Safe 5 at ฿7,490 adds a color touchscreen that makes reading a destination address far easier on the eye, plus a microSD slot.

Mainly on an iPhone? There is exactly one option: the Safe 7 at ฿11,900.

Want the cheapest way in, with eyes open? The Model One at ฿2,990 still works well and still gets updates, but it has no secure element and Trezor itself has stopped selling it.

The Model T at ฿6,590 is the one we no longer recommend: it costs nearly as much as the Safe 5, has no secure element, and is equally discontinued. Unless you specifically want that design, the Safe 5 is the better use of the money.

Common questions

Is Trezor safer than other brands?

Honestly, not automatically. Every brand works on the same principle: keys on the device, confirmation on the device. Trezor's choice is to open the code; other brands make other choices. What actually loses people their coins is almost never the brand — it is a badly stored recovery phrase, or a second-hand device that was set up before it reached them.

Is the Model One still worth buying?

It is, if you know the trade. You get the cheapest entry in the range and years of security updates still to come. But there is no secure element, it connects over the older Micro USB, and Trezor has stopped selling it. If you can stretch a little, the Safe 3 is clearly the more complete device.

Can I move from Trezor to another brand?

Yes. The 12 and 24-word phrases use BIP39, which the whole industry shares, so entering the same words into another brand brings your balances back. The exception is the multi-share backup, which uses a different standard and does not always travel.

Where should I buy one to be safe?

This matters more than picking the model. A second-hand wallet, or one from an unknown middleman, is a real risk: if it was set up before it reached you, whoever set it up holds the phrase and can empty it whenever they like. One rule to remember

Anyone who asks for your recovery phrase is a scammer. No exceptions.

Neither SIAMBC nor Trezor will ever ask for it, whatever reason is given — warranty claims, identity verification, system updates or account recovery. Those words are the key to your funds. Whoever has them owns your crypto, and it can never be recovered.
