In short

  • Trezor Safe 7 has two secure elements; Ledger Stax has one, certified CC EAL6+ Two chips does not mean twice as secure. Both are already at a very high level.
  • The screens are two different ideas The Safe 7 has a 2.5-inch color touchscreen; the Stax has a 3.7-inch curved E Ink display.
  • Open source is where they really diverge Trezor publishes firmware and hardware design. Ledger publishes apps and SDK only.
  • Both work with an iPhone over Bluetooth The Stax adds NFC on top.
  • The Stax ships with a Ledger Recovery Key in the box That accessory works with the Ledger Flex and Stax only.

We get asked this constantly: between the Trezor Safe 7 and the Ledger Stax, which one should you buy? These are the flagships of both brands. Both have a touchscreen, both do Bluetooth, both charge wirelessly. The price gap between them is not small.

Here is the comparison point by point, without taking sides. Every spec below comes from our own comparison table rather than from memory.

🖥️ The screens are two different ideas

The Ledger Stax has a 3.7-inch curved E Ink panel at 400 x 670. It is clearly the larger of the two, and a long destination address is easier to read on it because E Ink does not shine light at you and the image stays on screen even when the device is off.

The Trezor Safe 7 has a 2.5-inch color touchscreen at 520 x 380. It is smaller but it is color, and it responds faster than E Ink, which refreshes slowly by nature. If you want a screen that feels quick, this is the one.

🔐 Secure elements

The Trezor Safe 7 carries two secure elements, TROPIC01 and OPTIGA Trust M. The Ledger Stax uses a single secure element certified CC EAL6+.

To be straight about it: two chips does not mean twice as secure. Both sit at a very high level already, and almost every real loss we hear about in Thailand comes from someone being tricked into handing over their recovery phrase, not from an attack on the chip.

🔓 Open source, where they really diverge

Trezor publishes both its firmware and its hardware designs for outsiders to inspect. Ledger publishes its apps and SDK only; the device firmware and the secure element are not published.

If you value code that outsiders can audit, this single row decides it. If you are happy with a large brand that a lot of people already use, it may not matter to you at all.

📱 Both work with a phone

Both have Bluetooth, so both work with an iPhone and with Android, and both connect to a computer over USB-C. The difference is that the Stax adds NFC as another route, while the Safe 7 is the first Trezor that works with an iPhone at all — no other Trezor does.

🔑 The Ledger Recovery Key in the Stax box

The Ledger Stax ships with a Ledger Recovery Key, a card for backing up your recovery phrase without writing it on paper. It works only with the Flex and the Stax — the Nano range cannot use it — and it is something the Safe 7 does not include.

One reminder either way: whether you back up on a card or on paper, nobody is entitled to see your recovery phrase. SIAMBC will never ask, and neither will Trezor or Ledger. Anyone who asks is a scammer, without exception.

💡 So which one should you buy

Take the Trezor Safe 7 if you want firmware and hardware that are both open to inspection, a color screen that responds quickly, and the lower price.

Take the Ledger Stax if you want the largest and easiest-to-read screen, NFC as an extra route, and the Recovery Key included in the box.
